In The Pit: The Story Of Women, Queer, and Non-binary People in Punk music
After conducting research and multiple interviews, I put together a 90 page 12x12 book about underrepresented groups in punk and hardcore music. Being active in the punk scene for years, I have always been conscious about the lack of representation and exposure for women and queer people like myself. The inspiration for this book was catered towards myself at the age of 16. I created this book for in an effort to remind myself and others that women and queer people are here and active in these communities, and we have been for a very long time.
D.I.Y Aspects
Within my thesis, I wanted to implement some DIY aspects. Here is a video displaying some of the DIY aspects, including a vellum insert with crude drawings overtop, and a small pocket that has a “postcard” to take with you as a momento.
Figuring out how to account for these aspects in the printing process took a lot of consideration. I had to print 2 blank pages and cut them out in order to sandwich the insert between the blank pages so it would be secure. Including this made the book that much more tangible and connected it to its punk roots.
